Rich Text block

Write formatted text with headings, lists, links, images and links to your documents.

What it's for

Rich Text is the main block for writing on a page: paragraphs, headings, bulleted and numbered lists, links, quotes, tables and images. Peny's AI also reads published Rich Text, so clear, complete text helps it answer residents' questions.

Add it to a page

  1. Open the page in the builder.
  2. In Add blocks, under Content, drag Rich Text onto the page.
  3. With the block selected, click the pencil (Edit). You can also double-click the block, or click Edit settings in the Settings panel.
  4. Type your text in the editor that opens.
  5. Click Save.

Your text shows on the canvas right away. Like every change, it goes live when you publish the page.

Format your text

The toolbar at the top of the editor has these tools. Hover over a button to see its name.

  • Bold, Italic, Underline and Strikethrough.
  • Text formatting — turn the selected line into Large Heading, Medium Heading or Small Heading, or back to Normal. Clear formatting removes styling.
  • Color highlight — highlight text in a color. Remove all coloring takes it off.
  • Link — select text, click Link (or press Ctrl+K, or ⌘K on a Mac), enter the full web address, then click Link. Unlink removes a link.
  • Quote and Code blocks.
  • Bullet list and Numbered list.
  • Insert a table and Insert a divider.
  • Align text left, Center text and Align text right — align the paragraph or heading your cursor is in.
  • Undo and Redo.

Add an image

  1. Click where the image should go.
  2. Click the image button (Add images and video) in the toolbar.
  3. Choose the image file.
  4. Under the image, fill in Alt text to describe it for screen readers.
  5. Set the other options under the image if you need them.

Each image has these options:

  • Caption — text shown under the image on the page.
  • Alt text — a description screen readers read aloud. It isn't shown on the page.
  • Image width — 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% (the default).
  • Alignment — Left (the default), Center or Right.
  • Link — a web address or document link that opens when someone clicks the image.

Link to a document from your library

  1. In the editor, type @.
  2. Start typing the document's name.
  3. Pick the document from the list.

Peny inserts a link to that document. It opens in a preview on the page. To add documents to your library, see Manage documents and videos.

Settings

Rich Text has one setting in the Settings panel on the right:

  • Position — where the text column sits on the page. Center (the default), Left and Right keep the text at a comfortable reading width and place it in the middle, on the left or on the right. Full width uses the wider area that tables, collapsibles and dividers use.

To align a single paragraph or heading, use the alignment buttons in the editor instead.

Tips

  • Start with Large Heading. The page title at the top is the page's main heading. Use Large Heading for each section and Medium Heading for parts of a section. Don't skip levels.
  • Write link text that says where it goes, such as Apply for a building permit, not click here.
  • Give every image alt text. Describe what it shows, for example Volunteers planting trees at Peny City Park. The accessibility check flags images without it.
  • Keep paragraphs short. Many residents read on a phone.
  • Put text side by side by placing Rich Text blocks in a container's columns. See Container block.
  • If the editor says "This content is too large to save. Please shorten it.", split the text into two Rich Text blocks.

Example

The block below is a live Rich Text block with Position: Center.

Fall leaf pickup

Crews collect leaves every Monday from November 10 through December 15.

  1. Rake leaves to the edge of the curb by 7 a.m.
  2. Keep leaves loose. Bagged leaves aren't collected.
  3. Keep leaves away from storm drains and mailboxes.

Tip: Sign up for alerts in the Peny app to hear about weather delays.

Staff can warn residents about delays with a post. See Target a zone and notify residents.
